Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, return of a classic
Cranking up Bubble Bobble 4 Friends takes me back a generation or two! Bubble Bobble is a game I remember fondly from my early childhood, it’s a classic arcade game with such a simple premise and Bubble Bobble 4 friends does not deviate from this at all.
The menu takes you back straight away with the all too familiar sounds and music making you think there is no possible way it’s been 20 something odd years since you were busy popping bubbles as a kid. There are two options from the menu, the core Bubble Bobble 4 Friends game, or an arcade machine which delightfully contains the 1986 original Bubble Bobble.
Bubble Bobble 4 Friends does not change the core formula of Bubble Bobble at all, the idea is still the same, trap the enemies in a bubble and then pop it (then collect some fruit) and that’s it. Its simple good fun. Bubble Bobble 4 Friends has 50 levels (5 areas of 10 levels) which can then be repeated on a much harder difficulty. The theme is a child’s bedroom and the simple graphics are incredibly gorgeous and there are no performance issues in sight.
The difference is that Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, as the title alludes to, is that you can pick up and play this locally with 4 players. It’s a great family friendly game to enjoy with the youngsters (maybe not on the harder difficulty) and works simply because its so easy to learn the basics and get going within minutes.
Bubble Bobble 4 Friends is a fantastic modernized throwback to a great series of games. It might be lacking for levels for the price, especially if you don’t enjoy getting beat up in the harder difficulty, but I am sure this is something that can addressed later. The only other disappointment is a lack of an online component or even an online leaderboard. However, I look forward to playing this with my son in a few years’ time and letting him enjoy the Bubble Bobble experience.
Bubble Bobble 4 Friends releases 19th November on Nintendo Switch!
