COVID-19 sparks gamer influx

You may have heard many facts, figures and statistics around Coronavirus COVID-19 and the many effects it is having on society both here in NZ and across the globe.

Here’s a few more stats that may be of interest though…

  • Steam hit 20 million concurrent (signed in players) over the weekend with 6.2 million of them actually in a game.
  • Call of Duty Warzone hit 15 million players after just 3 days.
  • Italy’s broadband infrastructure was tested when it saw a 70% increase in internet traffic due to those in lockdown turning to online gaming with Fortnite being the main go to.
  • CS:GO surpassed 1 million concurrent players for the first time ever yesterday with 1,024,845 players online.

While there aren’t any stats to the ready, I would also say that viewership on streams via Twitch, Mixer and Youtube would be higher than normal as well. Would be interesting to see.

While we are not in any way down playing the human impact this virus is having around the world, it’s good to see that in the midst gamers are still playing together (but not together!) and breaking records doing it.
