Darius Cozmic Collections arrive for Switch

Ah, the good old days, slapping some coins into and arcade machine and watching your pocket money go down the gurgler as you died repeatedly in what seemed like a simple game. If you are getting old like me you will remember the side scrolling shoot-ems otherwise known as Shmups. Mainstays of arcade machines and retro classics, shmups seem to stand the test of time and still provide great entertainment.

And now, arguably one of the greatest series of the genre, Darius, has had a couple of collections released on the Nintendo Switch. Darius has a long history, swimming its way few various arcade releases and old school console versions. Its a classic series of shmup with a robo aquatic type theme, most of the bosses resembling some form of mechanized fish.

Darius games all follow essentially the same formula. You are a space fightercraft blasting your way through levels with missiles, bombs and a forcefield. At the end of the level you face a boss and then you are presented with multiple paths forward. As you progress through levels upgrades drop, allowing you to power up your attacks. Losing a life results in you losing your upgrades, which can basically be run ending.

There are 2 collections available, the Darius Arcade collection and the Darius Console collection, the price is pretty steep so I do feel you have to be a bit of shmup nut to add them both to your library.

The arcade collection features 7 versions to play:

Darius (Arcade, original version)
Darius (Arcade, new version)
Darius (Arcade, extra version)
Darius II (Arcade, Dual Screen version)
SAGAIA (Arcade, ver.1)
SAGAIA (Arcade, ver.2)
Darius Gaiden (Arcade)

And the console collection has 9 versions to play:

Darius II (Mega Drive, JP version)
SAGAIA (Genesis, US version)
SAGAIA (Master System, EU version)
Darius Twin (Super Famicom, JP version)
Darius Twin (Super NES, US version)
Darius Force (Super Famicom, JP version)
Super Nova (Super NES, US version)
Darius Alpha (PC Engine, JP version)
Darius Plus (PC Engine, JP version)

All of the games perform well and run really smoothly, I have not had a single problem at all during my playtime so far. Which is actually quite rare with a lot of releases like this. Alot of attention has gone into detail and some features that are often overlooked with ports have been added. There are 6 save state slots per game and a replay feature that allows you to capture you run through’s. The soundtracks are super strong and definitely add to the enjoyment.

The best of the collection is Darius Gaiden, its an absolute joy to play. Graphically looks great and the soundtrack is fantastic. Perhaps one day I might even get to the end, who knows! If you a shmup fan I would definitely suggest at least looking at getting the arcade collection. These are well done ports with enough features to warrant picking them up.

A complimentary Nintendo Switch code was provided to Gamehub for review purposes

A solid couple of collections of some retro classics, that many in the west may previously not had a chance to get ahold of. A couple of questionable decisions but otherwise really solid ports. A definite recommend for fans of shmups
